Abstract
This chapter explores the ambiguities in the gender position of psychoanalysis by looking at the way the issue of sexual difference appears in the most important of the foundational texts of psychoanalysis, Freud’s (1900) Interpretation of Dreams. Frosh argues that this text works with conventional categories of masculinity and femininity in such a way that both sides of a constitutive tension are visible – both how sexual difference functions as an organising principle central to personal identity and how its constructed character makes transgression of conventional gender categorisation possible.

Additional Information: | Book synopsis: Freud and patriarchy starts from the observation that psychoanalytic theory puts into play a way of conceiving the psychic — or subjectivity — as something constructed from a model that assumes a generalized equivalence between culture, civilization and masculinity. By assuming this parameter, psychoanalysis places as a theoretical model something that should be explained rather than taken for granted. The exploration and preservation of the original Freudian models and their developments mainly seeks its own power. In addition to the notes, in Freud's own texts, of elements that allow us to glimpse different models. Rethinking a new urgent psychoanalysis aligned with the progressive empowerment of women and the feminist struggle, the book includes several reflections, ranging from Freud's canonical texts to the new approaches of Oswald de Andrade, Deleuze and Guattari. |
