Abstract
High-resolution observations of interstellar Na I, Ca II, CH, CH(+) and CN towards the moderately reddened star HD 26571 are presented. Two velocity components are identified in the atomic lines at heliocentric velocities of about + 12 and + 20 km/s. Lines due to CH and CN were found to associated with the latter component, which was found to have a larger N(Na I)/N(Ca II) ratio. CH(+) was not detected. A simple chemical model suggests that densities in excess of 1000 particles/cu cm may be required to account for the CN column density. The similarity of the velocity of the molecular lines with those of the Taurus dark clouds, which lie close to the line-of-sight, suggests that this diffuse cloud is associated with the Taurus molecular cloud complex.
