Abstract

What is the task of writing and theorising in relation to state violence today? How do we study contemporary articulations of legal, extralegal and administrative violence without normalising them, and without contributing to their entrenchment, if writing does indeed have an effect on its subject? How do we calibrate our thinking about the current constellations of state violence in modes that tend towards disinvestment, divestment, and reparation; in other words, in modes that resist the enthralled attention and captivation that violence and violent discourses seek? These are questions that may be worth rethinking in light of the current moment where on the one hand state violence in liberal democracies increasingly takes legal and administrative forms; while on the other hand, the allure of the extralegal, as a promise of transgressive agency that is associated with sovereign power, resonates widely, in ways that seem to be contributing to the rise of right-wing populism and neo-fascism. I approach these questions having tried to make sense of extralegal state violence in the context of Turkey and its so-called “deep state,” which has required me to grapple not only with the usual questions of mode, style and voice that attend all writing, but also with questions of the role of my imagination and investments.
