Abstract
Book synopsis: This collection addresses a range of original and translated writings in English and Scots - among them, conduct manuals, colonial tracts, diaries, letters, dialogues, poetry, drama, chronicles - by English, Scots and Welsh men and women in and about the Atlantic archipelago. It explores the many meanings of civility and related terms in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It complicates and enriches our critical understanding of this terminology, especially when it is used to define the distinctiveness of the 'early modern' period. In so doing, this collection helps to recover the depth and range of the period's critical debate about cultural and colonial encounters, gender relationships, authority and its responsibilities, sociability, and politeness.
