Abstract
The study of speech acts is a vibrant area in pragmatics research. This chapter starts with a presentation of key notions in Speech Act Theory as formulated by J. Austin and J. Searle, including a consideration of some of the limitations of the theory. It is followed by an overview of work on speech acts among Hispanists within the past 15 years. Methodological trends in the study of speech acts and future directions in the area are also considered.
