Grant, Catherine Research portfolio: Screenstudies.video. UNSPECIFIED. (Unpublished)
Abstract
SCREENSTUDIES.VIDEO collects and reflects on the significant body of experimental film and audio-visual media studies research produced since January 2014 through online videographic practice by Catherine Grant as a continuing pioneer of these creative, critical and scholarly forms. The central aims motivating this study of the practice and theory of the audio-visual essay in the field of audio-visual media research are: 1. to explore the possibilities of research methods involving ‘found footage’ or remix-based digital editing procedures, alongside related curatorial and presentational interventions; 2. to assess what happens when written utterances in audio-visual media studies are used simply to supplement, comment on, or verbally summarise research performed in the same medium or mode as the focus of the research (films, television, audio-visual artworks, internet videos). In summary, this project investigates the new knowledge and understanding generated when the creative production of remixed audio-visual material centrally constitutes the research into audio-visual media. Which comprises various elements including digital videos (published online or screened at festivals/events internationally since 2014); written reflections on these forms and practices (published online since 2014) and new accompanying texts; Recorded interviews and presentations about, and related curatorial interventions into, these practices.
