Iwowo, Vanessa (2016) In the eye of the beholder: making 'Sense' of leadership development in Africa. Academy of Management Proceedings 2016 (1), ISSN 0065-0668.
Abstract
The paper contributes to the emerging critical perspective on global management education and leadership development in a multi-faceted world. It takes a critical look at leadership, particularly with respect to how this is conceptualised and understood, and, also, what are the implications for such epistemological leanings. This is in light of recent criticisms that arise with respect to how knowledge is created and represented. This paper addresses the dynamics, processes and challenges associated with developing leadership capacity in Africa and it is situated within the context of a leading African institution. The subaltern voices that speak through this study appear mainly consistent with a strong community orientation, which rests fundamentally on traditional values of social sensitivity and collective responsibility.
