    Abstract

This commentary paper critically discusses the recent debatepaper by Petry et al. (2014) that argued there was now aninternational consensus for assessing Internet GamingDisorder (IGD). Our collective opinions vary considerablyregarding many different aspects of online gaming. However, we contend that the paper by Petry andcolleagues does not provide a true and representativeinternational community of researchers in this area. Thispaper critically discusses and provides commentary on(i) the representativeness of the international group thatwrote the‘consensus’paper, and (ii) each of the IGDcriteria. The paper also includes a brief discussion oninitiatives that could be taken to move thefield towardsconsensus. It is hoped that this paper will foster debatein the IGDfield and lead to improved theory, bettermethodologically designed studies, and more robustempirical evidence as regards problematic gaming andits psychosocial consequences and impact.
