Book synopsis: En los albores del siglo XIX, cuando Europa se reconfiguraba después de la debacle napoleónica y el continente americano iniciaba nuevas andaduras, ya liberado de los lazos coloniales, el artista de Augsburgo Juan Mauricio Rugendas (1802-1858) se aventuraba a registrar con vuelo artístico sus impresiones de las tierras y los pueblos del otro lado del Atlántico. Con el tiempo, el joven artista viajero se transformaría en uno de los más intuitivos intérpretes de las sociedades que se gestaban en el Imperio brasileño y en las jóvenes repúblicas hispanoamericanas. Su producción es gigantesca. Son millares de dibujos y centenas de pinturas al óleo en los que materializó su deseo de "mostrar al mundo los tesoros del espacio tropical" y su vocación de "ser el pionero en un campo de las artes" que, según auguraba al final de su vida, otros desarrollarían de manera más completa. Hoy, su obra constituye uno de los más ricos legados artísticos dedicados a representar la América de la primera mitad del siglo XIX, una fuente inagotable de inspiración e información para amplios estudios americanistas y para la comprensión sensible del devenir de nuestros pueblos, como se muestra en este libro.

Over time, the young traveling artist would become one of the most intuitive interpreters of the societies that were brewing in the Brazilian Empire and in the young Spanish-American republics. Its production is gigantic. There are thousands of drawings and hundreds of oil paintings in which he materialized his desire to "show the world the treasures of tropical space" and his vocation to "be the pioneer in a field of the arts" which, according to what he predicted at the end of his life, Today, his work constitutes one of the richest artistic legacies dedicated to representing America in the first half of the 19th century, an inexhaustible source of inspiration and information for extensive Americanist studies and for a sensitive understanding of the future of our peoples, as shown in this book. |
