Abstract
Drawing on conversation analysis and sociopragmatics, this paper examines the procedures employed by speakers of Ecuadorian Spanish, corresponding to one particular social group, to open ‘personal’ telephone conversations. These procedures are analyzed against the canonical model that has been described for North American English (Schegloff, 1986), and for which claims of universality have been made. Deviations from the canon are highlighted. It is proposed that some of these deviations constitute instances of situational variation and that others can possibly be regarded as examples of cultural variation. The need for more studies on telephone conversations in different contexts in Ecuadorian and other varieties of Spanish (and other languages) to facilitate cross-cultural comparisons is emphasized.
