    Abstract

I was invited to speak at this workshop, and to take part in the bigger project, organised by Valérie Sténion (Université Paris 13) and Elizabeth Amann (University of Ghent) ‘Marchandisation et expérience des mondes littéraires’ . The project aims to curate a series of artefacts and objects at an exhibition to be held at Bibliothèque Forney, Paris (projected for 2025) and a book emerging from the project (2023/2024). My paper brings together and compares prints illustrating Rousseau's 'Julie' which were designed to appear outside the material book in a variety of domestic contexts. These include almanacs and large-format prints that could be used for decoration, ie framed and hung on the wall. In each case, the visual interpretation reflects the context of viewing and at the same time suggests distinct patterns of consumption and forms of identification arising from the experience of beholding the images.
