Abstract
The report presents key findings from research conducted by ICPR, Birkbeck in partnership with Youth Justice Legal Centre at Just for Kids Law. An online survey with criminal defence solicitors and in-depth interviews with youth court magistrates and youth justice staff, explored the knowledge, skills and attributes required of defence solicitors who advise children at the police station and represent them in court. The research highlights the importance of encouraging legal specialism for working in the youth justice system and quality assuring training and competencies.
