Abstract
An essay in a catalogue to accompany the exhibition: Documentary Genealogies: Photography 1848–1917 at the Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid (16 November 2022 - 27 February 2023), curated by Jorge Ribalta. The essay explores the history of pre-documentary photography in relation in photography between documents of power and images of revolution in the form of pictures of barricades. It goes on to consider images, in the words of Molly Nesbit, as 'barricades against the bourgeois viewer' in Eugene Atget, Heinrich Zille and others.
