Abstract
This article argues that, in order to value the contributions of exile, one needs to start from questioning hegemonic epistemological and historiographic frameworks, both national and supranational. More specifically, the article focuses on considering what is at stake in attempting to integrate the cultural and social outputs of exiles within frameworks that invoke universality and transnationality. Using as an example the life and professional career of the Catalan psychiatrist from Republican exile Josep Solanes, the article points out the importance of interpreting some key contributions in the history of psychiatry as produced thanks to, and not despite, marginality and itinerancy. In doing this, the possibility opens up to think global and transnational discourses otherwise, in a critically de-centred or re-centred fashion.
