Abstract
While much has been written about trans life in the early twentieth century and how it may have looked, little of this has addressed how it may have felt and what it meant for those individuals who crossed the line between genders. Using a biographical approach and drawing on the vast archive of introspective documents generated by Percy Grainger, this thesis recovers some of the tools and language Grainger used to understand themself and construct an identity outside the gender binary. Through focusing on Grainger, a composer, folk song collector, and pianist, this study shows how race and class shaped their experience of the Edwardian city and how in that context they pieced together a trans identity that was rooted in their wealth, celebrity, and white supremacist ideology. This thesis draws on techniques of musicology to show how, along with their letters and journals, Grainger used their artistic output to express and process their complicated relationship with transness.
