Abstract
‘When the past resists her historiographies: Venice and the seventeenth century’. This was an invited paper delivered at a conference at the Collège de France in June 2001, on uses of early modernity, chiefly in the nineteenth century; the special issue gathers the work of important historians and literary historians of the seventeenth and of the nineteenth century. The article investigates the persistent nature of stereotypes in Venetian history. It starts by considering the uses of archival material in the age of Rankean “scientific” history, and then works back in time to the seventeenth-century production of that material. In the context of a conference on the “invention” of the seventeenth century, my paper takes a different line, arguing that archives pose limits to historians' capacity both to invent and to analyse the past.
