    Abstract

Book synopsis: Since the late eighteenth century, France and Germany found themselves face to face, opposite to each other in a pattern that is constantly fed symbols and stories adversarial nature. Insofar as myths describe "what never was and what continues," they constitute a material used to forge its own identity by differentiating themselves from the neighbor. Thereafter, the Franco-German relations were always and still marked by conflicts and wars, so that the image of the other as "hereditary enemy" is firmly rooted in mutual perception, both sides of the Rhine, until the mid- twentieth century. But if the political myths as mental weapons, can be the driving forces of conflict, they can also contribute - the example of Franco-German relations after 1945 - to transform the former" enemies" to "friends" hereditary. This book analyzes the perceptions, stereotypes construction, housing political scene, but also some taboos and return of the repressed.
