Abstract
This article tries to define the perception of historical time in a period of transition within Portuguese society. With the end of the dictatorship and of the revolutionary process (which many felt as a defeat), the institutionalization of parliamentary democracy and the integration in the European Economic Community (later European Union), Portugal suffers a sudden and radical transformation. The depth of such a change creates a sense of accelerated time. In this article, we will try to understand how was this sudden shift experienced, by looking at some cultural phenomena from the late seventies and early eighties, and analyse how democratic society inscribes both the authoritarian and the revolutionary past in its own self-image as an autonomous historical period.
